However, when an individual tends to forget even the simplest things, there is already something definitely wrong. There is a chance that one has Alzheimer's disease.

So, What is Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimers disease is a disorder in the brain. In time, the patient will gradually lose both the intellectual and social abilities making it difficult to do anything and even interact with others.

This disease commonly afflicts people above 65 years of age. There are currently 4.5 million Americans that are suffering from this disease. It is projected that this number will increase, as the more population will reach the retirement age.

Alzheimer's Disease is the most common form of dementia; although, one could argue that dementia is just a symptom, which is caused by a disorder such as Alzheimers disease. So Alzheimer's could be classified as a brain disorder that impairs a person's mental functioning, especially memory, thinking, and behavior.

Types of Dementia

Alzheimer's Disease is accounting for between 50% and 70% of all dementias.

The effects of the different types of dementia are similar, but not identical, as each one tends to affect different parts of the brain.

Here are the most common forms of dementia :

AIDS related dementia Alcohol related dementia

Alzheimer's disease, has two forms :

1. Familial Alzheimers Disease (FAD), also known as Early Onset Alzheimer's or Younger Onset Alzheimers.

2. Sporadic Alzheimer's Disease, also known as Late Onset Alzheimers.

Dementia with Lewy bodies: Another common form of dementia, sharing many similarities with Alzheimer's disease.

Down syndrome: Research has established a link between Down syndrome and Alzheimers disease.

Frontal lobe dementia, including Pick's disease.

Vascular Dementia: The second most common cause of dementia, after Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's dementia can be the hardest part of the disease to accept and live with.

Alzheimers dementia can cause a person who was once pleasant and forgiving become violent and harsh; and it can even cause a person to see things that aren't there. They can suddenly erupt into screaming fits, complaining that someone is trying to kill them, or, even worse, they can begin to thrash about and hit those that are trying to care for them. For this reason, people suffering from Alzheimer's dementia must be cared for by someone who is professionally trained and who possesses a great amount of patience.
